The Chairman of the Georgian Bar Association participated in the 53rd Conference of Presidents of European Bar Associations, held in Vienna. David Asatiani attended the event both as the Chairman of the Georgian Bar Association and as the President of the European Association of Lawyers (AEA-EAL).
The main theme of the three-day conference was: “Deregulation and the Rule of Law: Opportunity or Threat?”
David Asatiani addressed the conference participants, emphasizing the critical need to strengthen the legal profession in the face of the challenges to the rule of law that have become increasingly prevalent in today’s world. He highlighted that international professional solidarity among lawyers is of paramount importance in overcoming these challenges.
“At a time when societies in many countries are deeply polarized, political populism has become a trend, and mass media—especially social platforms—are struggling against the powerful waves of disinformation and propaganda, universal values of democracy are being undermined. In such times, lawyers remain the key professionals with the direct responsibility to fight with dignity and determination to uphold the ideals of the rule of law and democracy, ensuring the effective protection of human rights and legal order.” — stated Davit Asatiani.
The Conference of Presidents of European Bar Associations (EPK) is a prestigious forum with a long-standing tradition in the European legal profession. Since 1972, it has been held annually in Vienna, Austria.
