David Asatiani, the chairman of the Georgian Bar Association, met with the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze. The primary focus of the meeting was the newly adopted Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer. During the meeting, Mr. Asatiani highlighted the significance of the Convention, emphasizing that it represents the first-ever and historic document at the European level aimed at strengthening lawyers’ rights and safeguarding the freedom of their professional activities.
"Тhe meeting with the Prime Minister was constructive and oriented on bottom-line. We discussed the importance of the Convention and the necessity of its ratification in Georgia. The signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Luxembourg in May, and I am optimistic that Georgia will be among the first countries to sign this important international instrument," said David Asatiani.
The text of the Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 12 March. This unprecedented document sets out guarantees for the strengthening of lawyers’ rights and the freedom of their professional activities. It is a crucial international instrument for reinforcing the independence of the legal profession.
Ratification of the Convention in Georgia will support the enhancement of the legal profession’s independence and contribute to the strengthening of the rule of law, the provision of fair justice, and the recognition of the vital role of lawyers in a democratic society.
